For a decade, if you asked a West Asheville resident where to meet a friend on Haywood Road, the answer landed somewhere in the 700 block. Biscuit Head at 733, Jargon at 715, Nine Mile at 751, the Hop West at 721, Westville Pub at 777. That block did the heavy lifting.
Walk Haywood this month and the picture is different. The new kitchens, the returning ones, and the coffee shops with a line out the door are clustering at the two ends of the street. The middle is still holding, but the center of gravity is moving. Layer on the I-26 Connector work that reroutes commuters through the Haywood exit starting Aug. 2, and your everyday orbit through 28806 is genuinely about to shift.
Here is what's open, what's coming, and what to do about the traffic.
The Aug. 2 change that reshapes your commute before dinner
If you take Patton Avenue home from anywhere east and hop onto Westgate Parkway to get groceries or gas, that habit ends this Sunday. The North Carolina Department of Transportation is permanently closing the flyover ramp connecting eastbound Patton Avenue to Westgate Parkway on Aug. 2 for the I-26 Connector project, with the marked detour routing drivers onto I-240 West/I-26 East and off at the Haywood Road exit before doubling back via Exit 3B.
The practical effect: several thousand daily drivers who used to bypass Haywood entirely now have a legitimate reason to be on it. If you already live off Haywood, expect the stretch between the exit and Louisiana Avenue to feel busier at rush hour for the foreseeable future. If you were already used to weaving through Westgate for a quick errand, budget an extra ten minutes or, better, walk to whatever you needed in the first place.
The upside is that the same detour deposits you within a block of two of the most talked-about new addresses on the street.
The 500 block is doing something it hasn't done in years
The address at 521 Haywood Road has been a rotating door. Zia Taqueria closed there in 2022. Taco Boy took the space and closed in 2025. On Aug. 10, Thunder Burgerz West opens in the same building, and the concept is a genuine departure from what the block has hosted before.
Owner Roy Trantham III is running it as a 1950s diner tied to Asheville's own history. The name is a nod to the 1958 Robert Mitchum film Thunder Road, which was filmed here, and Trantham's father made a cameo in a 1936 Ford. The Haywood Road location is roughly two to three times the size of the original Smokey Park Highway store, with about 90 indoor seats, another 90 across two patios, a full bar, a pool table, and a stage behind the building for live music, karaoke, and outdoor movies. The menu carries over the smash burgers, 25 flavors of jumbo wings, hand-dipped Hershey's ice cream, and dollar-wing Wednesdays.
A block up at 575 Haywood, Hail Mary is already open in the former Tastee Diner space, run by former Tastee employees and pouring shareable snacks, sandwiches, and cocktails or mocktails. Two doors past that at 647 Haywood, Potential New Boyfriend is serving ice cream desserts and wine on a Hi-Fi sound system, Wednesday through Sunday, 2 to 10 p.m.
Three genuinely new rooms inside a five-minute walk of each other. That did not exist on this block a year ago.
The 1000s are pulling weight, too
Farther west, the pattern repeats. MochaBox at 1050 Haywood opened as a Yemeni and Middle Eastern coffee house with late-night hours, crystal chandeliers, and a full food menu. The Turkish coffee, chai, and pistachio latte are the ones locals keep coming back for.
Between the 500s and the 1000s, Rowan Coffee opened a second location on April 4 at 785 Haywood, refurbishing an old auto garage. That project was a signal in itself. When a downtown roaster picks a second address on Haywood over anywhere else in the metro, it is telling you where the foot traffic is going.
And then there's Finest, the mid-century Italian deli that opened this year with a covered patio spilling onto Haywood. The $7.50 bodega egg-and-cheese on a New York kaiser roll is deliberately positioned as an every-morning purchase rather than an occasion.
What's still holding the middle
None of this means the classic stretch has faded. The 700 block still contains the neighborhood's most reliable weekday rotation:
- Westville Pub, 777 Haywood — open since 2002, still the original watering hole and live music room.
- The West End Bakery, 757 Haywood — the baked-goods-and-lunch anchor.
- Nine Mile, 751 Haywood — vegetarian-friendly Caribbean pasta.
- Biscuit Head, 733 Haywood — the jam bar remains the reason.
- Hop West, 721 Haywood — Asheville-made ice cream.
- Jargon, 715 Haywood — New American plates and cocktails for the actual night out.
- Sunny Point Café, 626 Haywood — brunch that hasn't slipped.
- Archetype Brewing, 265 Haywood — clean American and Belgian ales at the east end.
- Taco Billy, 201 Haywood — market-fresh breakfast and lunch tacos closer to the bridge.
The reason to name every address here is that the density is the story. You can move from Archetype at 265 to MochaBox at 1050 on a single street without ever repeating a kind of room. That is not true of any other corridor in Asheville, and it is why the I-26 detour matters more here than it would somewhere else.
The park situation, honestly
Carrier Park is the other question West Asheville residents keep asking each other. The answer as of this summer is partial. The east side of the park, including the picnic shelter, the wetlands education area, the rolling lawn, and the parking lot, is open, and the French Broad River Greenway runs through the park uninterrupted. The rest of the park remains closed for Helene reconstruction. Plan a walk or a picnic, not a full afternoon of the velodrome and the fields.
That reality is the one to hold in your head when you're routing an out-of-town guest around. The greenway still works. The full park doesn't yet.
The Costco question, briefly
For the residents who have been half-following the Costco saga: in June, Mayor Esther Manheimer said she had met with Costco representatives and described the West Asheville project as back on track after the company withdrew its application in February over infrastructure and cost concerns. That is a status update, not a groundbreaking. If you were counting on it for your fall grocery run, keep counting on Ingles.
A one-week routing that uses all of the above
Here's how a resident who actually pays attention could work the corridor between now and Labor Day without repeating a room:
- Monday coffee at Rowan, 785 Haywood. Sit in the old garage bay.
- Tuesday lunch at Finest, on the patio. Egg and cheese, an espresso, out in twenty minutes.
- Wednesday dinner at Thunder Burgerz West, 521 Haywood. Dollar wing night, if the soft opening timing holds.
- Thursday drinks at Hail Mary, 575 Haywood. Mocktail if you're driving the detour home.
- Friday show night at Westville, 777 Haywood. The 700 block still runs Friday.
- Saturday dessert at Potential New Boyfriend, 647 Haywood. Late.
- Sunday Yemeni coffee and a long book at MochaBox, 1050 Haywood.
You'll notice that itinerary uses the entire street, not one block. That is the actual shift.
The through line
West Asheville's food identity used to be legible from a single stretch of sidewalk. Now it takes a full mile of Haywood to see it, and the I-26 detour is about to send more of your neighbors past every one of those addresses whether they meant to visit or not. The block you live closest to matters a little more this month than it did last month.
